Materials recovery facilities: a 1997 update
Article Abstract:
There was a dramatic increase in the numbers of materials recovery facilities and mixed waste processing facilities in the United States during the early 1990s but by the end of 1995 the market for recyclable materials had fallen and fewer facilities were being planned. The market only recovered slightly by 1997, with the price of a ton of roadside recyclable materials decreasing by 67% from June 1995 to 1997. Recycling is no longer viewed as economically attractive despite public policy being in favour of it. Cost-effectiveness is now an imperative.

Investing in commercial recycling: serving automobile plans
Article Abstract:
A contract with General Motors has provided the volumes necessary for City Management Corp to increase the processing capability and expand their recycling program. Earlier only about 5% of the waste going to the Romulus transfer facility was recycled but now the overall waste stream is being recovered including the pre-existing material from other commercial accounts. The General Motors contract has activated City Management's material recovery facilities (MRF) construction plans.

Trends in equipment and processing
Article Abstract:
The number of places converting waste material into something useful has gone up steadily. Materials recovery facilities (MRFs) have also developed techniques of using a wider range of waste material such as plastic, aerosol cans, paint cans, textiles and wood. Though most of the MRFs are privately owned, the number of government operated organizations is slowly increasing The growth of MRFs and mixed waste processing facilities have been new source of employment.
