Controlled aerobic digestion of thickened sludge: challenge and opportunity
Article Abstract:
Controlled aerobic digestion of thickened sludges requires additional knowledge of the processes involved in order to effect compliance with the new 503 Class B sludge regulations. While the new regulation can be met by holding the sludge for a minimum of 60 days at 15 degrees Celsius, it can also be served by reducing the pathogens to under 2 million colony forming units, decreasing volatile solids by 38% or having a standard oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) of under 1.5 mg Oxygen per hour per gram TSS. A correct design will require the study of oxygen needs, mixing, tank configuration, nitrification, temperature and the flexibility of the system.
