New York losing its recycling momentum?

Article Abstract:

Municipal recycling programs in New York are facing uncertainty in the future as funding declines due to court approval of solid waste transport across state lines. The Supreme Court's decision prompts more haulers to bring municipal solid waste (MSW) to other states where landfills are more affordable. Consequently, the increased out-of-state shipping of MSWs results in lesser financing for recycling programs as they lose tipping fee revenues to landfills in other states.

After the fall

Article Abstract:

The scrap recycling industry could experience another round of consolidation as the industry's three major players continue to aim at creating $1-billion companies after merger activities halted in mid-1998. The industry, dominated by Metal Management Inc, Philip Services Corp and Recycling Industries Inc, saw stock valued decline and some bankruptcy filings, but the three players continue to operate, with premier scrap processing facilities in North America.

Scrap processors score Superfund victory

Article Abstract:

The Superfund Recycling Equity Act has been signed into law by Pres Clinton on Nov 29, 1999, as part of the FY2000 budget bill package. The new law amended the original 1980 Superfund law that held recyclers to the same liability standard as those in the waste disposal industry. The legislation has clarified that recycling is not disposal and shipping for recycling is not arranging for disposal.
