Composting and vermicomposting at correctional facilities
Article Abstract:
Four Carolina prisons are expanding their on-site composting and vermicomposting projects, with the aim of reducing the amount of garbage sent ot landfills. Caledonia Correctional Institution in Halifax County was the first prison to implement on-site composting in 1995, and in 1998 it began composting in aerated bins, with wood chips used as a bulking agent. Brown Creek correctional Institution began a waste reduction program in 1996 which includes composting and vermicomposting, reducing its solid waste disposal by 67% in 1996/97.

Dumpster divers give a boost to recycling
Article Abstract:
Advocates of recycling are always seeking new ways to encourage materials recovery, with greater emphasis on composting programs, commercial office paper recovery and support of reuse centers. There is also a growing band of 'found object artists', and the Dumpster Divers is one such group consisting of around 40 artists and collectors. Some junk artists have become very successful mainstream sculptors and artisans, such as Leo Sewell, who creates sculptures mainly from recovered metal items.

Achieving pathogen stabilization using vermicomposting
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken at a biosolids vermicomposting unit in Ocoee, FL, indicates that vermicomposting can be used as an alternative method for stabilization of Class A biosolids. Following pathogen stabilization, the castings would have to be air dried to 75% solids to meet vector attraction reduction requirements. The Environmental Protection Agency's required three- to four-fold reduction in pathogens was achieved in all of the pathogen indicators within 144 hours.
