New projects target selective loads
Article Abstract:
Mixed waste composting plants are under development in Des Moines, IA, and in Placer County, CA. Each plant is designed to improve materials diversion and replace curbside recycling programs. The Des Moines plant will focus on producing compost from yard trimmings which will collected through a residential program, while the facility in Placer County will produce compost from yard trimmings and construction and demolition debris. The plants expect to process 8,000 tons/year and 700 tons/day of mixed materials, respectively.

Blenders and blue jeans add to curbside diversion
Article Abstract:
A non-profit recycler, The St. Paul Neighbourhood Consortium, its hauler, Super Cycle, and a charity organisation, Good Will, attempted to meet Minnesota's landfill diversion goal of 45 percent through an innovative curbside program. Overall collection costs did not increase as a result of collecting a different assortment of materials. Usable materials were sold through Goodwill Stores.
