New solutions for old manure problems
Article Abstract:
The Agricultural Science Dept at Texas A&M-Commerce has invented an in-vessel composter which enables an operator to control moisture, porosity, temperature and oxygen in the composting of animal manures. This device is an alternative to static bin composting or incineration. The Animal Science Research Center of Purdue University has developed new methods to compost manure residues which were transported by a gravity separator from the Center's flush system. The compost is mixed with moldy hay and wet straw and later spread in corn fields.

Manure management centre
Article Abstract:
Poultry and livestock are important for the economy of Ohio, and they also generate manure. The problem has been studied by Ohio State University's Thomas Payne, and Ted Short who has headed a Nutrient Management Team. Composting is seen as an effective way to deal with the manure, since there is not enough land to spread it. Odor, weight and volume are reduced through composting. Three examples of good practice are available and include a chicken farm and a hog farm.

Composting pig manure in Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong Agriculture and Fisheries Dept has mandated the pig-on-litter system or in-situ composting in 1987 to alleviate the problem of pollution in the city. The problem of urban infringement into agricultural lands is exacerbated by pollution caused by the disposal of animal manures. Statistics show that 70% of steam pollution in the New Territories is due to pig manure caused by the lack of sufficient land and proper disposal management.
