New waste, new world?
Article Abstract:
The recent merger between USA Waste and Waste Management highlights the increasing consolidation of major players in the waste management industry. The merger of the two firms will result in a company which analysts believe will have a market share of 20% to 25%. The economic impetus for mergers is that large firms will have economies of scale, greater access to capital and centralized equipment procurement. Policymakers and analysts are asking if nationally managed waste hauling firms can effectively compete in an industry where knowledge of local sales and service conditions are necessary.

Climbing the wall to boost recycling rates
Article Abstract:
Recycling has been undertaken int he US for three decades, and rates of recycling are rising through a range of measures in most of the US. Institutionalization of recycling in urban areas leads to questions such as whether innovation can be maintained. Recycling has been popular, though methods of funding may sometimes be less popular where they involve higher taxes. There are also questions about the possible upper limits of recycling and the extent to which households can be persuaded to take part.
