Bringing added value to recycled wood products
Article Abstract:
Trestlewood Furniture Company, of Salt Lake City, Utah, recycles old wood from a dismantled trestle which spanned the Great Salt Lake. The company uses the wood to make picnic tables, chairs, benches and bird feeders. The company bought 207,000 board feet of the redwood timber in 1993 and it uses as much of it as they can. Small pieces are put aside to be mulched. The company are proud that their wood has a history behind it and that it has not been deliberately cut down. There is enough wood to produce furniture until the year 2000.

Recycled paper market update
Article Abstract:
There is a need to increase market demand for paper with recycled content if the paper recycling industry is to achieve long-term stability. State and local governments are already mandated by an executive order from Pres Bill Clinton to buy and use recycled paper. Two paper companies, Union Camp and American Renaissance Paper, have taken the gauntlet of educating the public about recycled paper. Union Camp has launched a television advertising campaign while American Renaissance has launched a Web site.

Woody materials recycling: recovering treated lumber
Article Abstract:
Research focusing on treated wood has been undertaken to determine ways of reusing them. Every year, an estimate of six million cubic meters of wood, treated with such chemicals as creosote, pentachlorophenol and chromated copper arsenate, are either reused as poles, fuel and lumber or disposed of in landfills. Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI anticipates that the number will rise due to an increase in the use of treated wood for construction.
