Ninety precent by 2030: waste reduction strategies in Toronto
Article Abstract:
The Metropolitan Toronto Works Department has outlined a plan to manage solid waste in the area populated by 2.2 million people. The plan consists of regulating packaging waste, public education and improvement of waste reduction programs as well as aggressive drives for recycling. Residents are encouraged to separate household refuse into recyclables, regular garbage and organics. Biogenic wastes will be processed in composting facilities located around the metropolitan and curbside recycling programs will manage the rest of the household garbage.

Transitions at a biosolids composting site
Article Abstract:
The Hawk Ridge Composting facility in Unity, ME, has seen diversification since the consolidation of Browning Ferris Industries' New England organics operations in Oct 1996. Composting remains its main activity, and it receives around 30,000 cubic yards a year of municipal biosolids from around 20 different sources. It also handles between 10,000 cubic yards a year and 15,000 cubic yards a year of papermill sludge, along with smaller quantities of animal bedding. It is currently developing a Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedure.

Solid waste composting trending upward: With 18 operating facilities and two more under construction , MSW composting has begun a gradual upswing in the United States
Article Abstract:
Three new solid waste composting projects started in the US in 1998, indicating a gradual upswing in municipal solid waste (MSW) composting in the US. MSW composting has had most success in rural or isolated areas and MSW composting can compete economically. The largest MSW compost facility is Crisp County, Georgia, fuelled mainly by organic fines and rejects from the Solid Waste Authority's mixed waste processing facility. Some of the 12 other MSW composting facilities have been in operation for five to 10 years.
