Odor control experiences: lessons from the biofilter
Article Abstract:
Proper biofilter media mixing and regulation of the temperature, humidity, and performance are necessary for effective odor control by biofilters at composting facilities. Biofilters may be above ground beds or modified rolloff containers. A wet environment in the biofilter increases the microbial activity and improves performance. The media needs frequent replacements. The spiral effect can be minimized with a homogenous mixture and balanced filter bed. The methodology to determine biomass levels and free air space of media at saturated conditions is presented.

State biosolids management update
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken among 46 state biosolids coordinators in the US reveals very varied approaches to issues such as pollution concentration limits and pathogen reduction. Pollutant concentration limits are more restrictive than Part 503 in 17 states, while only Oregon has stricter vector attraction reduction standards than Part 503. No state has stricter pathogen reduction requirements than those detailed in Part 503, but 32 states have more restrictive management practices.

EPA streamlines biosolids management
Article Abstract:
The US Environmental Protection Agency mentioned its technical standards for the use and disposal of biosolids in February 1993 which provided some sense of satisfaction that some consistency would be there in the realm of biosolids regulations. The US Environmental Protection Agency is decreasing the obstacles to permit convenient administration of state biosolids programs. The function of the agency is also being seen in a new light.
