Old electronic equipment worth its weight in gold
Article Abstract:
United Recycling Industries Inc., a Carol Stream, IL-based company, and Universal Integrated Circuits, also of Carol Stream, are engaged in recycling old electronic equipment in order to give them new uses. Jim Glavin, operations manager for United Recycling, said that the company's objective is to recycle large amounts of electronic equipment while giving its customers added value for unwanted items. The company retrieves precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum from printed circuit boards. Universal Integrated Circuits retrieves microprocessors from old equipment. Regular linear chips may fetch 10 cents while some Pentium Pro processors may sell for $500. The microprocessors are sold to companies that either sell them to other buyers or use them to repair older equipment.
