On-farm involvement: recycling food residuals and agricultural film
Article Abstract:
The New Jersey Department of Agriculture's representative Karen Kritz is developing programs for reusing food residuals to help both food processors and farmers. Kritz became interested in recycling after working with food processors who were researching on tomato skin as fertilizer. After convincing farmers to use the food residuals on their land, food processing by-products were unloaded in farms which were found out to enrich the nutrient content of the soil. The food residuals were also used to fill farm lanes at the state prison while the inmates received food that could have eventually gone to waste.

Composting liquid food residuals
Article Abstract:
Kyneton Kompost, located near Melbourne, Australia, receives liquid food nutrient residuals from three nearby processing facilities. These residuals are composted with the sawdust output of the Black Forest Sawmill of Woodend, Australia. In both 1997 and 1998, Kyneton composted 5.5 million lt of liquid food materials, thus ensuring that these valuable resources were returned to sustainable primary production. The company has developed a continuous composting process, thus ensuring that minimal leachate occurs.
