On-site composting of meat processing residuals
Article Abstract:
Excel Corp., a pork processor and subsidiary of Cargill Inc., plans to achieve a 60% reduction in waste by the year 2005 through the composting of its own organic residuals. Feedstocks include cardboard, livestock bedding, biosolids and paunch material. The process will compost about 10,000 tons of waste per year.

Chickens get first crack at restaurant scraps
Article Abstract:
The Vermont Compost Co. redirects approximately seven tons of restaurant food residuals per month away from the municipal solid waste stream, using the edible waste as poultry feed. The resulting poultry manure is then composted and sold to catalogue vendors and landscapers.

Issues are presented concerning the composting of meat by-products by Mapleton Farms Country Butcher Shop, Union Springs, NY, as an alternative to rendering. The composition of the compost is discussed.
