Paper giants spin their own Web
Article Abstract:
Paper manufacturers International Paper Co, Georgia-Pacific Corp and Weyerhaeuser Co announced that are in the process of creating a joint venture that will sell paper and other forest products on the Internet. The companies said the planned 'electronic marketplace' will provide procurement and sales functions to streamline purchasing operations, reduce inventories, lower internal costs and increase capital efficiency in the industry. The joint venture will operate independently from the three companies with its own CEO and board of directors.

North Star signs Tecnored deal
Article Abstract:
North Star Steel Co, based in Minneapolis, MN, and Tecnologos Desenvolvimento Tecnologico, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have created a 50-50 joint venture company called StarTec Iron LLC. The joint venture controls sole rights to Tecnored technology for processing iron ore and iron-bearing materials into a 'liquid iron' scrap substitute material. For the first demonstration plant, StarTec is now completing final engineering and selection of a site in Brazil.

Bethlehem, Novamerican to build tube mill
Article Abstract:
Bethlehem Steel Corp of Bethlehem, PA, and Novamerican Steel of Montreal, Quebec, have formed a joint venture to build steel tubes for automotive parts supplier Dana Corp. The allied companies named the joint venture BethNova Tube LLC. Selection process for the site of the mill is underway, with construction to be completed and tube production starting 1st qtr of 2001.
