SDI receives permit for new mill
Article Abstract:
Steel Dynamics Inc of Fort Wayne, IN, has been granted by the Indiana Dept of Environmental Management a revised permit for its proposed structural steel mill in Whitley County, IN. The proposed plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than one million tons of steels in the form of structural shapes, such as I-beams and rail. With the permit, the company can proceed to asking the approval of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Melt shop closing is Correnti's first move
Article Abstract:
Birmingham Steel Corp chief executive John Correnti's first order of business after gaining power at the Birmingham, AL-based firm is to close its melt shop in Memphis, TN. The facility, which makes billets for the firm's special bar quality rolling mills in Cleveland, OH, was temporarily shut down at the start of Jan 2000. A number of issues are plaguing the melt shop, including equipment trouble, high worker turnover and poor management.

North American steelmakers fight for survival
Article Abstract:
Northwestern Steel and WIre Co of Sterling, IL, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-Dec 2000, citing unfair foreign competition as the primary reason for its financial difficulties. Days after this filing, LTV Corp also sought Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in a federal court in Ohio. LTV also blame the dumping of foreign steel in the American market as the main reason for its financial troubles.
