Plain talk about 120,000 tons a year
Article Abstract:
The city of Jacksonville, Florida, banned yard trimmings from landfills in 1992 and selected Enviro-Comp to process 45,000 tons of the same. One of the significant problems encountered by the company was plastic bags and the issue was left alone by commissioners as plastic bag ban would mean political loss. Another problem was that the site received 124,000 tons of yard trimmings in 1993. A new and larger site was developed sans the windrows because the company was unable to maintain the 60% moisture content in them. The company is operating its own debagging system.

Redirecting organics in Mexico City
Article Abstract:
Direccion General de Servicios Urbanos is the agency responsible for Mexico City's solid waste management and organic waste collection and disposal. It launched the first yard trimmings composting facilities in Nov 1996. As a result of such project, yard trimmings have been converted into soil conditioners which are helpful in the maintenance of Mexico's public parks and freeway plantings. The project has saved space in existing sanitary landfills for Mexico's nonbiodegradable wastes and has helped avoid leachate and methane problems found in traditional landfills.
