Recycling at construction sites
Article Abstract:
Seattle, WA-based Sellen Construction Co has engaged in on-site recycling of waste metals and concrete at its job sites. As a contractor with an annual volume exceeding $200 million in 1996, it was having difficulties in managing other job site wastes. However, Microsoft urged its contractors to focus on recycling. The success of Microsoft's recycling thrust became an impetus for the construction industry and promoted the practice of on-site recycling. Sellen generated $186,000 in savings for a Microsoft project that included a combined parking and offices structures.

How cost effective is deconstruction?
Article Abstract:
Research shows that deconstruction not only boosts recycling but is also less expensive than traditional demolition practices. Using benefit-cost ratios, deconstruction was found to be approximately 10% lower than demolition, with salvaged materials marketing providing improved return-on-investment revenues.
