Recycling cafeteria food residuals
Article Abstract:
The fifth grade students of Cape Cod Hill School use cafeteria food remains to make compost. Two students are assigned each day to monitor proper segregation of food residuals and transfers residuals into a composting shed. The bins are lined with hay, straw or leaves first to prevent food waste from falling into the bottom of the bins. These wastes are spread with a spading fork, inoculated with mature compost, neutralized with limestone, and covered again with hay, straw and leaves for the next day's composting. A third student measures the air temperatures of the residuals.

City tests curbside organics collection options
Article Abstract:
The city of San Francisco, CA, launched pilot programs in cooperation with Norcal Waste Systems to study its options on the collection of curbside organics. Some 6,500 households have participated in the programs. The participation in the programs include various combinations of yard trimmings, food residuals, split cart organics and recycling. The organics collections was targetted because food residuals alone comprise 25% to 30% of the residential waste stream. The programs also tested the containers and vehicles to be used in the collections.
