Solid waste agency conquers a volume challenge

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, set up a composting program in 1990 when a site was built with a $1 million investment. Linn County and Cedar Rapids and set up a partnership called Bluestem, which has managed composting operations from Jul 1994. Bluestem has increased storage and site capacity and hasmoved to a Scat 4932 from a small drum turner for windrows. Windrows have been widened, though they are the same length and height. New bagging and shredding equipment has been purchased with financial help from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Composter expands with additional feedstocks
Article Abstract:
The Wood Recycle and Composting Center of Wichita, Kansas has relocated to a 77-acre site in order to boost processing capabilities. The company expects to dedicate 60% of the new site to grinding and composting, with a new focus on organics and drywall recycling. In 1998, Wood Recycle processed 13,880 tons of wood residuals and yard trimmings, plus 3-4 tons daily of pallet wood cutoffs. Compost sales totalled 6,000 cubic yards, while mulch sales reached 36,000 cubic yards.
