Steel looks solid, but so is the competition
Article Abstract:
Steel remains in great demand in the industrial world, but aluminum, plastics and other market competitors are battling to gain market share. Plastics and aluminum can be used in a variety of applications in industry. However, plastics and aluminum both have problems to deal with, including recyclability in the case of plastics. Despite the solid competition posed by plastics and aluminum, steel's well-established recycling infrastructure makes the material remain in demand in the industrial world.

Mini-mill boom no small phenomenon
Article Abstract:
The US steel mini-mill industry continues to prosper even as there are indications that some mills will have to integrate in the coming years. The mini-mills, which use electric arc furnaces, are not small and are found in non-traditional steel-making areas. The market for scrap steel is presently about 105 to 110 million tons annually and will increase by four to six million tons by the year 2000. This additional demand for steel will be supplied by the mini-mill industry.

Specialty metals: as bad as it gets
Article Abstract:
The scrap specialty metals industry went deeper into the mire in 1998 as the oversupply situation that greeted the year was compounded by decreased demand. An economic crisis that threatens to envelope the globe pushed demand further down. Moreover, the price of primary material has gone so low that scrap specialty metals could not compete. Another factor was the saturation of the golf club market, which accounted for much of the growth of the titanium alloy market in the past couple of years.
