The role of question order and respondent experience in contingent-valuation studies

Article Abstract:

Areas of respondent experience in question ordering in contingent valuation studies are addressed through the experience of white-water boating in the Grand Canyon. Value formation may be affected by respondent experience, leading to valuation estimates with survey instrument effects. When respondents value written scenarios of white-water trips differently to their actural trips, an experience effect is intimated. Question-ordering effects were discovered in some estimates for unexperienced boaters but not for experienced ones.

Using conjoint analysis to derive estimates of compensating variation

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the different approaches to derive estimates of Hicksian compensating variation from conjoint analysis data. The different approaches produced varied results with respect to consistency with utility theory, magnitude of welfare estimates, statistical significance of key variables and confidence bounds on welfare estimates. The results indicate that conjoint analyses are not a panacea for problems concerning contingent-valuation and travel-cost methodologies.
