Article Abstract:
The amount of material diverted from the waste stream in the US is continuing to rise, there are an increasing number of curbside recycling programs and facilities able to process source separated recyclables are increasing. Many states have made significant progress, but there is still room for improvement. Six of the seven regions showed increased recycling rates over the past year according to a survey, although the use of incineration is declining overall. 15 States use landfills for 75% or more of their waste.

The US generated 280,675,000 tons of solid waste in 1991, down 12 million from the previous year. Seventy-six percent was landfilled, the national recycling rate rose to 14%, while incineration rate was 10%. Curbside recycling programs were up 40% and materials recovery facilities increased by more than 100%. The number of landfills dropped 8%, while yard waste composting sites rose 50%. Total incinerating capacity was up 21% and a 33% increase was recorded in the number of mixed MSW composting facilities.

Article Abstract:
A study to determine the usage of available solid waste management methods was conducted. The 1998 findings indicate that only 40% of landfills are in use and their capacity have been increased. Recycling has increased to 30% compared to 8% in 1990. Curbside recycling programs have increased to 8,937 from 1,042 in 1989, with 20 states having more than 100 programs under implementation. The adoption of yard trimmings composting has also grown from 651 to 3,484.
