The wood industry learns to win on the back end
Article Abstract:
The management of wood residues was a key issue under discussion at the Second Southeastern Conference on Wood in Knoxville, TN, in mid-Oct 1999. It is often difficult for primary and secondary manufacturers in the US to market their wood residues, and they may be obliged to dispose of them on site or in landfills. There is a clear need for information about the availability, quantity and types of wood residues produced, along with markets and disposal practices. Issues discussed including the growing trend towards converting residuals into a value-added range of products.

Organic in the aisles, compost on the farm
Article Abstract:
There is a steady rise in the number of US supermarkets selling organic foods. This trend has been welcomed by many shoppers, who are particularly pleased to have a wide range of organic foods to choose from. Growing interest in organic foods will lead to a rise in demand from farmers for compost. This will in turn mean that organic feedstocks such as industrial and commercial organics and biosolids will be used in a growing number of compost sites.

Resourceful marketing
Article Abstract:
Success in the goals of 1992 recycling programs are tempered by the presence of active criticisms. The marketing of processed materials is the particular area of concern to the doubtful opposition. In lieuof this development, the government, individuals and concerned organizations have stepped up campaigns designed to enhance the marketability of processed waste and expand the current demand levels for these materials.
