Using leachate on the windrows
Article Abstract:
The Metro Waste Authority in Des Moines, Iowa, sprays leachate to add moisture and increase biological activity of the windrows at the yard trimmings composting site. The compost produced is used as a final cover for the landfill that is adjacent to the Metro Compost Center. This removes the need to buy soil and gives 65% cost saving as compared to traditional leachate treatment. Yard trimmings treated with leachate show differences in volume loss, temperature curves, and volatilization of substrate as compared to those in windrows with moisture from only potable water.

Black Forest Program: recycling landscape wastes
Article Abstract:
The central composting plant in the city of Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany was improved by designing a method which reduced the space needed for composting. In addition, a roof was built over the composting area so that the process can continue in the absence of dry weather. The compost plant serves the city's residents six days a week and consists of a receiving area where recyclables are dropped off and segregated. These are then processed, distributed to windrows and allowed to decompose for five weeks.
