Using tire chips to control landfill leachate

Article Abstract:

A Waste Tire Management Fund was set up by the Iowa Legislature in 1996, and the aim is to help develop new markets for used tires, both shredded and in the form of crumb rubber. Leachate collection systems have tended to use gravel or sand to filter water in leachate collection arrangements at landfill sites. The water at these sites sends to be caustic and volatile, and tire chips have the advantage of porosity, which permits greater infiltration. There is an end user's incentive program, which aims to cut the cost of tire chips so that they can compete with sand filter systems.

Festival seeks independence from landfill

Article Abstract:

Festival for the Eno is a festival in Durham, North Carolina, set up by the Eno River Association, and attracting some 40,000 people. The organizers aim to keep waste to a minimum, recycling as much as they can. There are receptacles for collecting different types of materials such as glass, and an effort is made to educate festival goers, who have tended not to notice signs. Volunteers collect and process the waste. Food waste is composted, with Organics Matter, a local company, providing services free of charge.

High school benefits from landfill gas recovery

Article Abstract:

The Antioch, Illinois Community High School is the first one in the United States to have its heat and electrical production powered by landfill gas. The installation of the gas cleaning and compression system benefited in several ways including low energy costs for the high school, decreased emissions through reduced need for traditional electrical generations sources and provided educational opportunities for students in different fields.
