Variable rate system works in Texas
Article Abstract:
Austin, TX has achieved a measure of success in its new waste management program which utilized a variable rate system for garbage collection. The 'Pay as you throw' program maintains a garbage collection schedule in which household garbage and recyclables were collected weekly while yard wastes such as leaves and grass clippings were gathered every Monday for composting. The convenience and financial incentives for recycling has greatly encouraged community participation and reduced the city's landfill disposal fees.
