What's perking down under?

Article Abstract:

The Australian Capital Territory's ACT Waste division has published the 'No Waste by 2010,' the country's most aggressive waste minimization plan. With recycling facilities in Australia now going into full development, various entrepreneurs are handling just about any scrap available and readying them for restoration, rebuilding, and remanufacturing. Government plans to construct one stop facilities for all types of discard collection and processing, aiming to eventually replace landfills. Such facilities are planned to be run using funds generated from rental fees from tenants.

Implementing reuse at Berkeley exchange

Article Abstract:

The experience of Urban Ore Inc, a reuse company operating two exchange centers in Berkeley, CA, is discussed. The reuse business interposes between building demolition/hauling and the recycling industry. The destruction of re-usable building items such as fixtures, doors and windows is avoided by providing a cost-effective means to get them to entities that need them. Reuse is best implemented at the local level, and can benefit individuals from all socioeconomic levels but most especially the low-income group.

Disposers vs. diverters

Article Abstract:

The author contrasts the waste management industry with the recycling industry, specifically with regard to competition and legislation. He argues that waste management enjoys advantages that should be extended to recycling businesses, especially since waste management still uses environmentally troublesome methods such as landfills and incineration.
