Using compost to control plant diseases

Article Abstract:

A number of alternatives to the broad spectrum soil fumigant methyl bromide (MB) are currently being developed. Researchers are also addressing the problem of soil recontamination with pathogens after MB fumigation. Areas of research include replacing sterilization procedures with soil organic matter management. This approach covers the application of green manures, animal manures, composts or biocontrol-agent-fortified composts. There is likely to be an increase in the use of organic amendments in agriculture.

Evaluating microbiology of compost: Microbial content of compost is helping producers and growers to understand its role as a soil inoculant and plant protector

Article Abstract:

Traditional compost analysis has concentrated on NPK and micronutrient concentrations in a similar way to fertilizer analysis. However growers and compost producers are becoming more aware of the significance of the microbial content of compost. BBC Laboratories in Tempe, Arizona, evaluates the microbiology of compost using similar methods to soil microbiology evaluations.
