Orlando Ayala, the chief operating officer of Microsoft Business Solutions, has stepped into one of the global tech giant's most influential and high-pressure positions and aims to map a global strategy for tapping the next frontier for technology, which are small and mid-size. He has to face lots of challenges, including fending off competition from open-source software and developing solutions for an immense market that has vastly varying needs, in order to accomplish his mission.

The gala to honor Hispanic business-builders came after a full day of discussions about access to capital in the US Hispanic economy that included CEOs and financial market specialists.
