Bad books/bad blood: feminism, eugenics, and culture in Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Lady Byron Vindicated.'
Article Abstract:
Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'The True Story of Lady Byron's Life' and its sequel 'Lady Byron Vindicated: A History of the Byron Controversy, From its Beginning in 1816 to the Present Time' are critiqued. The former was written by Stowe in 1869 in defense of her friend, Lord Byron's wife, who was blamed by Lord Byron's mistress in a published article for their failed marriage. Stowe wrote the sequel to give her side to the growing controversies that ensued, including the issues of feminism.

A flute made of human bone: 'Blood Meridian' and the survivors of American history
Article Abstract:
A critique of Cormac McCarthy's historical novel 'Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West' is presented. The novel's treatment of American history is admittedly revisionist, but it is not a typical revisionist rendering, which McCarthy insists is fragmentary. 'Blood Meridian' also moves beyond criticizing American imperialism to reveal the truth that it is impossible for today's Americans to separate themselves from their morally abhorrent past.
