Bhutan: From the Mediaeval to the Millennium
Article Abstract:
King Sigme Singye Wangchuk of Bhutan celebrated twenty-five years as monarch on June 2 1999. The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has undergone a significant transformation over the last 30 years, bringing itself into the world community and out of mediaeval isolation. According to the King, 'Gross National Happiness' is more important than 'Gross National Product'. An overview of recent developments and the challenges that lie ahead are given.

The new Iran: a myth or a reality?
Article Abstract:
The Islamic regime of Iran was established in February 1979 and now boasts a population of 70 million, along with 8.7% of total oil proven reserves worldwide. Khatami's victory in the May 1997 presidential elections is expected to bring a slow and gradual change to the state of Iran. Khatami is expected to persue economic reforms and international relations work implemented by his predecessor Rafsanjani.

Since the Gulf War ended, economic sanctions and military actions have been taken against Iraq in an attempt to change Iraqi foreign policy. Although they have been ineffective they are still the West's only realistic options.
