Class, consumption, and ethnic performance in vaudeville
Article Abstract:
Vaudeville's success in the 19th century was due to its allowing different classes of people access to the entertainment of other groups. Vaudeville promoters led the bourgeois to believe that they were seeing authentic ethnic performances and the working-class audience enjoyed seeing famous stars perform. This combination of varied acts created a concept of American culture.
