Vice President Al Gore and Governor George W. Bush will pour unprecedented resources in reaching out to Hispanic voters in their campaigns for U.S. president for the election in 2000. Experienced political Hispanic operatives are placed in central roles in each camp. Ted Cruz, Lionel Sosa and Margita Thompson work for Bush. Janet Murguia, Roger Salazar and Jose Villarreal are on Gore's staff.

Political scientists state that Hispanics vote along issue lines and generally favor government activism. In the most recent presidential election, exit polls indicated that 61% of Hispanics voted for Al Gore, versus 37% for George W. Bush.
