Modern? American? Jew? Museums and exhibitions of Ben Shahn's late paintings
Article Abstract:
The Jewish Museum in New York organized a centennial exhibition on Ben Shahn's works that could be held in any of the other Museums that would have told a different story about the artist and his paintings. He would be seen in the context of the 20th century American painting, or European and American modernism (MoMA) or Jewish culture, art and history and exhibitions of his work are instrumental in defining his position within the history of 20th century American art.

An overview is presented on the resurgence of artistic expression in New York, New York, during a period of pronounced social and political upheaval. The author argues that cultural changes, such as the rise of feminism, made some artists embrace traditional, conservative concepts and aesthetic ideals.
