Reassessing the history of postwar America
Article Abstract:
Many scholars of US culture make the mistake of assuming that the 1950s and the 1960s can be observed in stark juxtaposition, with the conformity of the 1950s being contrasted to the unconventionality of the 1960s. Actually, the histories of these two decades have never been that different. The 1950s, contrary to myth were also filled with political conflict, while the 1960s were more conservative that many chroniclers choose to recall. What can be said of this much-misunderstood era is that it was characterized by a sense of insecurity, one that would shape popular culture in unexpected ways.

The politics of culture in Cold War America
Article Abstract:
The University of Pennsylvania marked the opening of the papers of Howard Fast at its library by holding a conference on the cultural milieu in the early part of the Cold War. Fast, an unapologetic member of the Communist Party, was one of the leading figures of the American literary Left. His communism, however, was distinctly Americanized, deeply rooted as it was in his concern about racial inequities in the US. Papers from the conference that commemorated Fast's sixty-year career are presented in this journal's special section on the early Cold War years between 1945 and 1950.

A conversation with Howard Fast, March 23, 1994
Article Abstract:
Howard Fast believes communism remains a valid ideology for the times. He recounts the work of the American Communist party in the 1930s and 1940s and speaks of his disillusionment with its leadership when it became overly dependent on the Soviet Union. Fast notes that despite the persecution of the McCarthy era, party members such as himself were able to launch meaningful initiatives that would help shape policy in the decades after the demise of the American Communist Party. He is particular proud of his role in antiracism and pro-union activities.
