Reinhold Niebhur: the racial liberal as Burkean

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the political activism of theologian Reinhold Niebhur, an advocate of the US civil rights movement, and the writings of the conservative 18th-century politician Edmund Burke. Burke supported gradual social change conducted within the framework of the dominant political structure; Neibhur held this view in the 1950s, but abandoned it in the early 1960s when it became evident that racial integration was occurring too slowly.
