Revisioning death and dying: 19th-Century attitudes as reflected in Louisa May Alcott's Antebellum and Civil War writings
Article Abstract:
There was a dramatic shift between Victorian and contemporary attitudes towards sexuality and death and death came to be regarded as a natural process. The 19th century domestication of death was largely achieved through the efforts of women such as Louisa May Alcott, whose personal experiences with death and reflections on these antebellum along with Civil War experiences in her writings offer a unique vantage point form which examine the process involved in this revisioning of death and its associated imagery and rituals.
