The Aral Sea environmental crisis: problems and a way forward
Article Abstract:
It is widely believed that the drying-out of the Aral Sea is irreversible, according to Michael Fergus, partner in a Norwegian consulting firm. This may be the case for the whole Aral Sea, but work underway in Kazakhstan indicates that it could be possible to revive the North Aral, or Little Aral, Sea, or even return it to its former state. There is international concern about the fate of the Aral Sea, but little willingness to take positive action. However, there are signs that local communities in Kazakhstan are working to protect the North Aral Sea from further damage.

Russia and Islam: the history and prospects of a relationship
Article Abstract:
Prospects for stronger relations between Russia and its neighboring Moslem states are encouraging. Russian foreign policy has been refocused from a predominantly pro-Western orientation towards reactivation of its former ties. The inherent parallels in the cultural and historical evolution of Russia and the Moslem countries create favorable requisites for mutual cooperation between them.
