"The Organ of an Individual": William Lloyd Garrison and the Liberator
Article Abstract:
American slavery abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison had advanced his political agenda through his publications, particularly the Liberator. Garrison's advocacy of what came to be known as the New England abolition movement arose from the political, social and economic conditions of the print marketplace that were embodied in Garrison's management of the Liberator. The Liberator, however, did not only represent the republican ideals of the 18th century but also advanced the individualist ethos of the 19th century.
