The ideological matrix of reform in late-19th-century America and New Zealand: reading Bellamy's 'Looking Backward.' (Edward Bellamy)
Article Abstract:
Edward Bellamy's novel 'Looking Backwards' was popular in both the US and New Zealand, but only in New Zealand did its reform ideology result in real political change. The novel's reception illustrates cultural diffusion through the ideological matrix and the role of the hegemonic process. The late 19th-century ideological matrix of reform included elements of modernism, technological utopianism and Anglo-Saxon revitalization, which are combined in 'Looking Backward.' Reform was institutionalized in New Zealand during the 1890s, but in the US the movement was splintered and defused.
