The myth of the travelling wok: the overseas Chinese
Article Abstract:
The Cantonese and other Chinese who are scattered through the world did not do so under a plan for world domination. The 'Yellow Peril' idea, which claimed that the Cantonese traveled abroad and joined the restaurant business as part of a plan to spread hepatitis through their unwashed wok, was especially untrue. In fact, these Overseas Chinese did not intend to stay in their foreign destinations, but aimed to work hard and save, then return to China where they could retire comfortably. These Overseas Chinese are estimated to number around 28 million, 90% of whom are in Asian countries.

Article Abstract:
China needs to follow the provisions of the Joint Declaration and the Basic Law so that the transition of Hong Kong to the mainland in 1997. China will have to keep under control those who visualize the post 1997 scenario as ideal for exploitation. There is a need for cooperation between China and the UK, which in the past had been occasional. Contrary to the Chinese belief, the decline in Sino-British relations is more due to the Tiananmen Square incident of 1989 than the arrival of Chris Patten as Governor in 1992.

Hong Kong: a view from both sides
Article Abstract:
China and the UK are at loggerheads over various issues connected to the transfer of power of Hong Kong to the former in 1997. While the UK seeks to further the cause of democracy and freedom in the multi-racial Hong Kong society before its departure, China strongly opposes any major revamping of the political set-up in the British colony. The local populace in Hong Kong is clamoring for a say in this political process to secure themselves in post-1997 Hong Kong.
