The political economy of Laos: Poor state or poor policy?

Article Abstract:

The government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) experimented with a variety of approaches to economic reform, since the Communist takeover in 1975. The inertia of the Lao political system, hamstrung by a sclerotic political elute, centralized decision making and corruption makes a continuing dependency on foreign aid, together with ongoing inefficiency in the use of that aid, the most likely future for the Lao PDR.

Health care: reform may end up in the laps of state lawmakers

Article Abstract:

The failure of the federal government to enact health care reform will prompt state legislators to do adopt initiatives such as single-payer models, health care alliances and the streamlining of Medicaid delivery. This will have great impact on small- and medium-sized Hispanic American businesses.

State building in North Korea: from 'self reliant' to a 'military-first' state

Article Abstract:

The efforts, taken by the North Korean regime to overcome the economic problems and problems of food shortage are discussed. The transformation of this regime to a military-oriented regime are also highlighted.
