Contagious diseases qualify as 'handicap'
Article Abstract:
Courts have ruled that a contagious disease qualifies as a handicap, which must be accommodated by employers if at all possible. The decision came in a case regarding a school teacher with tuberculosis. In a related matter, a guideline involving Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) reaffirms the government's position that the disease cannot be spread by casual contact and must be treated as a handicap, not as basis for dismissal.
