Where honor is due: Frederick Douglass as representative black man
Article Abstract:
Frederick Douglass depicted himself as a self-made man and is accepted as an African American hero, yet in many ways he is a representative black man. Douglass's main accomplishment may have been self-promotion through his autobiographical works. Douglass was representative of a class of literate, Christian, Anglophile free black males, yet his goal of racial amalgamation has not been popular among black Americans. His status as a hero may be due to his adaptability to many circumstances or to his representation of black ambivalence on racial issues and gender relations.

Peter Hill, the first African American clockmaker
Article Abstract:
Peter Hill (1767-1820) was the first known African American clockmaker. He was trained by his master, a Quaker clockmaker in Burlington Township, New Jersey. As the Quakers of that area were active abolitionists, Hill was freed in 1794 at the age of 27 and continued to pursue his craft in the area. Hill's position as a skilled craftsman was unusual for an African American at that time. Five clocks made by Hill are known to still exist.
