Bijan Omrani discusses about the writings of Alexander Burnes and Lady Florentia Sale whose brilliant accounts give an intimate picture of history in the time leading up to the First Afghan war, including that most terrible of British military disasters, the massacre of 16,000 in retreat from Kabul in 1842. These writings serve valuable tools for a deeper understanding of cultural, geographic and ethnographic information, vital for a deeper understanding of the current situation.

Afghanistan and the search for unity
Article Abstract:
The efforts of some of the early rulers of Afghanistan to bring about unity and development in the country and the reasons for the overall failure of these attempts are discussed. The focus is on three specific periods in Afghanistan's history, namely, during the inception of the country in the 18th century, the work of the "Iron Amir" Abdur Rahman, and the rapid development under King Amanullah.

The arts and societies of the Kafirs of the Hindu Kush
Article Abstract:
The geographical, linguistic, socio-cultural setting and religious beliefs of the Kafirs, settled in the southern valleys of the Hindu Kush mountain area in northeastern Afghanistan, is discussed. The Kafirs of the Hindu Kush presented exhibited some significant cultural vestiges of the age-old Indo-Iranian beliefs and traditions, and also exhibited a fascinating variety of cultural features.
