Camus on Kafka and Melville: an unpublished letter
Article Abstract:
Albert Camus wrote about the influence of Franz Kafka and Hermann Melville in an unpublished letter written in 1951. Melville played a larger role in the thinking of Camus than did Kafka. The letter was received in February, 1990, by a member of the Washington University (St. Louis, MO) Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. It had been mailed by the 88-year-old Lieselotte Dieckmann, who had decided to clean out her files. Professor Dieckmann, now deceased, had written to Camus, probably in 1951. The Camus letter, photographically reproduced as typed, is in French.
