"Because they're my parents": an intergenerational study of felt obligation and parental caregiving
Article Abstract:
The attitudes of adults toward parental obligation and caregiving were investigated. Data from an intergenerational sample of 460 young and middle-aged men and women were analyzed to examine adults' views of felt obligation as a function of generation, gender and parental status. Empirical results showed that adults with one surviving parent tend to feel more obligation to provide assistance than adults with two surviving parents. Furthermore, young adult children have higher levels of felt obligation to their parents than middle-aged adults.

Timing of parental separation and attachment to parents in adolescence: Results of a prospective study from birth to age 16
Article Abstract:
The effects of parental separation on the quality of adolescents' attachment to parents and perception of parental care during childhood, were examined based on prospective longitudinal data from the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS). Exposure to parental separation was significantly linked to lower attachment to parents in adolescence, and the younger the child at time of separation, the lower their subsequent parental attachment.
