Beliefs about women's intergenerational family obligations to provide support before and after divorce and remarriage

Article Abstract:

A study examined perceptions of women's intergenerational family responsibilities after divorce and remarriage. Participants in the research felt that family members have a conditional obligation to assist other members who need help. The obligation of the older members to provide help to their adult children was found to be stronger than the obligation of adults to elderly mothers and mothers-in-law. Moreover, a greater obligation was discovered to biological relations than to in-laws, as well as to stepgrandchildren than to grandchildren.

Attitudes regarding obligations to assist an older parent or stepparent following later-life remarriage

Article Abstract:

Attitudes toward obligations to assist an older parent or stepparent following remarriage in later life were investigated. Data were analyzed from a sample of 189 men and 320 women who responded to vignettes that portray a later-life remarriage in which a family member needed assistance. Empirical results showed that members of the younger generation are perceived to have obligations to their elders even as there is no consensus about the kind of tasks that they should perform. It was also found that physical caregiving is the task receiving the least support.
