The range of prenatal testing options has expanded to include such methods as chorionic villus sampling, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS), and noninvasive alpha-feto-protein (AFP) testing. Amniocentesis, a common invasive diagnostic technique, remains a viable choice.

The use of experimental fetal surgery to treat spina bifida in babies is discussed. The experiences of one mother whose baby is diagnosed with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, and the subsequent operation on and delivery of her baby, are described.
