Children of incarcerated mothers
Article Abstract:
Children whose mothers are incarcerated in jails and prisons manifest emotional and behavioral problems. A review of literature reveals that children of incarcerated mothers tend to experience internalizing and externalizing problems, such as fear, withdrawal, anger, stealing and depression. Also, they have a tendency to experience incarceration because of their predisposition to engage in criminal activity. The impact of a mother's arrest on the lives of her children depends on the age of the child, the course of the mother's incarceration and the alternate caregiving arrangements.

Three faces of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
Article Abstract:
Labelling of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a biologic disorder serves some social functions. It helps to validate the existence of problem behavior, which parents may otherwise consider to be a temporary or developmentally normal problem. The labelling justifies the use of medication to restore healthy behavior. Parents stop blaming the child for the undesired behavior, thus increasing their adaptive capacities. Diagnosis of ADHD becomes a means of availing other services. Negative social reactions to ADHD labelling, and guidelines for educators are discussed.

Teachers' ratings of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and decisions for referral for services in Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Teachers' perceptions and ratings of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms among students and their referral decisions in public schools in Taiwan were examined through discriminant analysis. The checklist revealed that group membership of students can be predicted by Chinese teachers' ratings of ADHD. Teachers were found to have the ability to recognize children who are hyperactive in their classrooms and determine who is likely to be referred for services.
